| DAMASCUS - visit the World's oldest city... |
6th May 2010 |
Damascus is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world, bearing the indelible marks of a long succession of ancient civilizations: Amorite, Aramean, Assyrian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Umayyad, Ayyubid, Mameluk, Crusader, Ottoman and French.
Currently, the city has an estimated population of about 1,669,000. It is situated 80km inland from the Eastern shore of the Mediterranean and on a plateau 680 metres above sea level. Marking the divide between the fertile Anti-Lebanon range from which the waters flow that feed Damascus, and the harsh Syrian desert, Damascus is a rich oasis that once served as a natural hub for trade on the silk route. Today, Damascus is the natural starting and ending point for any visitor to Syria.
April, May, September and October are the best months to visit Syria, with low rainfall and temperatures somewhere in the mid to late twenties.
Whilst it is slowly developing as a destination, there are still precious few visitors to Syria. Air Malta will soon be starting direct flights to Damascus and we are pleased to offer you special itineraries including visits to Damascus, Aleppo, Palmyra and Latakia. Please contact us for more information.
