The Gambia
The Gambia is a thin sliver of land in West Africa. Imagine: 300 kilometres long and only about 35 kilometres wide, in fact almost completely surrounded by Senegal except for 80 kilometres of Atlantic coast which defines its western edge. The Gambia was made famous by Arthur Hayley's book "Roots". It gained independence from Britain in 1965 and is the oldest English speaking country in West Africa. Whilst The Gambia is one of the smallest countries in Africa it has a rich and varied history and a wide range of landscapes.

The Gambia is a year-round destination known predominantly for its perfect weather, beautiful beaches and friendly people. The fact that the country remains unspoilt and uncommercialised only adds to her charm and makes The Gambia an ideal holiday destination. The Gambia enjoys virtually uninterrupted sunshine with virtually no rainfall between November and June.

Royal Travel are pleased to introduce this unusual destination which is extremely good value for money. It is equally suitable for families, friends or honeymooners. Under the guidance of a specialist tour operator to The Gambia we can offer you the widest choice of hotels, from budget to deluxe, relaxed to lively, family friendly to child-free properties all year round - whatever kind of Gambia hotel you are looking for we have the right hotel for you. These are some of the examples we propose:

Gambia All-Inclusive Holidays: An all-inclusive holiday in The Gambia provides you with the security of knowing you need not save up your spending money as everything is laid on for you. You can simply relax in the sun and decide on your next cocktail. You get all of your drinks and meals included so you can eat and drink in your hotel and you do not have worry about taking any cash out with you whilst relaxing around the pool or during your evenings in the bar and restaurant.

Hotels suitable for bird watching: The Gambia is known for its astonishing birdlife and bird watchers are at risk of never wanting to return from the mangrove creeks and marsh plains of the Baobolong Wetlands or the savanna woodlands and tidal flats of Kiang West National Park.

Gambia Eco Lodges: Take for example the Mandina Lodges at Makasutu Forest which are unique and luxurious and situated on a mangrove-clothed tributary of the River Gambia in the heart of the African bush. They offer an upmarket experience in the wilderness second to none.

Gambia Spa Hotels: the Gambia is still a relatively new destination in terms of providing hotels with spa facilities but the idea is catching on fast. Consider the Coco Ocean Resort and Spa - expertly designed by its owners it has a wonderful beachfront location coupled with a professional spa - set in nine buildings overlooking the beach at Bijilo - in which you can enjoy a wide array of treatments ranging from all manner of massages to skin treatments and full body wraps. Another option would be The Sheraton Gambia Hotel built into the hillside, nestled between giant Baobab trees and situated directly on the beach.

We would suggest ideally a twin-centre holiday or honeymoon, beach and jungle, to give you a real taste and feel of "The Gambia Experience". For honeymooners our top choice for the "beach" would be Ngala Lodge, an exclusive boutique hotel set on a clifftop and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated on the edge of bustling Bakau, a genuine working African town. The hotel itself is truly romantic, with 18 individual suites, some with private jacuzzis. The restaurant is renowned both for its fantastic ocean views and its first-class cuisine.

Mandina Lodges would be our choice to immerse you in a "jungle" experience. Situated in a 1,000 acre forest in the heart of the bush, these 8 lodges give you the chance to explore the countryside and learn more about the culture and wildlife. Expert guides are on hand for walks through the forest and canoe trips among the mangroves. Wake to the view of the river as it comes alive with the dawn chorus. Experience monkeys and baboons playing in the forest, watch women collecting oyster shells at the riverbank and dine beside the campfire, under a breathtaking night sky.

We can complete the trip with airport transfers, shared or private, and a list of available excursions.
